Last two digits of year of manufacture—41 or 42—stamped over chamber. There is a stock lug and Mauser banner on front toggle link. Extractor and safety both marked. Proofmarks were commercial. Grip Markings? As mentioned earlier, each year and variation has different grip markings and has to be considered separately. For instance, the 1936 S/42’s are mostly blank with a very few numbered with the last two digits. The 1939 42’s are mostly blank or blank with a E/655, and again very few are numbered to the gun.

Since the transitioned the year from 1939-1940 with the "Z" suffix, the gun was probably made very late in 1939. The Imperial era is 1900-1918 (Germany is ruled by a Kaiser) The Weimar Period is 1919-1933 (Between the World Wars) The NAZI period is 1934-1945 (Hitler) The Spread winged eagle was used from 1939-1945.
